Katsura Funakoshi 2010 in Kumamoto
Katsura Funakoshi, born in Iwate in 1951, has carved human figures throughout his career. His sculptures are carved of camphor wood and then colored, with marble eyes. The Sculpture have a quiet demeanor and seem to be looking far into the distance. Many people throughout the world have been fascinated by the strong presence of his works.
This exhibition centers on the portraits sculptures of the 1980s, the strong torsos representing mountains of the 1990s, the Nudes and Sphinxes combining human and animal characteristics, and other wood sculptures up to the most recent The Another Sphinx, which was first shown in September 2010. It also introduces Katsura’s prints and drawings, giving a broad overview of his captivating artistic world.

After 2000: A Lunar Eclipse on the Water, 2003 / The Sphinx with Far Hands, 2006 / The Sphinx Floats in Forest, 2006 / The Another Sphinx, 2010 (the latest work in Autumn 2010)
