While drawing inspiration from elements of the real world such as architecture and natural landscapes, M.C.Escher had endeavored to construct his very own unique world based on his imagination -a world that can undeniably only be expressed within the contours of his artwork. His works replete with mystery, are not only discussed within the context of art, but also attract much interest from a wide range of fields including design, mathematics, and psychology, and persist to stimulate our imagination to this day. Presenting the works of Escher as a starting point, this exhibition further introduces over 200 works by artists of both past and present that maintain a sense of directionality and interest that coincide with Escher's concerns.
During his life Escher had found himself suffering from people's lack of understanding towards his works. In reflecting upon the course of history until our contemporary era however, there are indeed a significant number of "comrades" who like Escher, have attempted to subvert and reconstruct the familiar image of the world within their works. Such works enable the viewers to enjoyably immerse themselves in the absurd preposterousness of the sensations they convey, and at times through means of fiction, portray the essence of the world "more vividly than reality itself." This illusionary sense of imagination" that stems from Escher, undoubtedly functions as a catalyst that goes so far as to reverse the very way in which we perceive the real world. The exhibition serves to create pleasure through the subversion and wavering of common sense, and summons the viewers on a journey through a labyrinth of illusions.
