YANOBE Kenji
Contemporary artist.
Born in 1965 in Osaka, Kenji Yanobe currently lives and works in Osaka and Kyoto. Since the early 1990s, Yanobe has been incorporating the theme of survival in present-day society into his work, creating large-scale mechanical sculptural works that may be attached to one’s body or ridden and controlled. In 1997, he started “Atom Suit Project”, for which he visited post-accident Chernobyl wearing his homemade radiation protective suit. In Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, “Atom Car” is collected. With the dawning of the 21st century, Yanobe established his new theme, “revival”. He is continuing to develop creative activities, with such works as gigantic robot “Torayan” and his dedicated ship “Lucky Dragon”. After the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11 2011, his wish for recovery from the disaster was embodied in “Sun Child”, which has travelled both in and outside Japan. His recent solo exhibition was “CINEMATIZE” in Takamatsu Art Museum in summer 2016.
